Pilot Chemical Company Sponsors Local Chemistry Competition

Middle school students from Hamilton County, Ohio, competed in the third-annual local You Be The Chemist® Challenge on February 27 at Taylor Middle School in the Three Rivers School District. Developed by the Chemical Educational Foundation® (CEF), the Challenge is an exciting question-and-answer competition that encourages fifth- to eighth-grade students to sharpen their knowledge of chemistry concepts and their real-world applications. Students compete for prizes at the local and state levels and the ultimate prize of a trip to Washington, D.C. to vie for college scholarships. The Challenge program relies on partnerships between community members and organizations that seek to foster early engagement with science.

As one of several sponsors of the local Challenge, Pilot Chemical gave all of the competing students backpacks and water bottles.

Lee Garber-Ford, a seventh grader from Taylor Middle School, won and will represent Hamilton Country at the statewide Challenge in Toledo on April 29, 2017. The winner of the state competition will receive an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C to compete in the National Challenge on June 19 for $18,500 in college scholarships.

Pilot Chemical Company teamed up with Matthew 25: Ministries on October 5 to sort and inspect clothing for those in need. Seven employees from Pilot volunteered as part of Pilot’s annual Environmental Health Safety and Security (EHS&S) Conference.

“As EHS&S professionals, we are responsible for protecting our communities and the environment, so this was a natural fit for our team,” said Hayley Lauterbur, corporate safety leader at Pilot. “It is important work and deeply meaningful to our team to have had the opportunity to work with Matthew 25: Ministries to help our community and the areas that need it most.”

Pilot volunteers included: Kelly Coleman, Middletown, Ohio; Ollie Turner, Lockland, Ohio; Michele Smith, Mason, Ohio; Hayley Lauterbur, Blue Ash, Ohio; Natasha Walcott, Chicago, Ill.; Demetrius Nettles, Avenel, N.J.; and Roy Loe, Houston, Texas.

Matthew 25: Ministries rescues and reuses approximately 15,000,000 pounds of products from major corporations and manufacturers each year. The organization then redistributes those items to people in desperate need throughout the U.S. and worldwide.
“We are so thankful for our volunteers who support our processing center,” said Shelly Clos, volunteer coordinator with Matthew 25: Ministries. “For every hour of time donated, a volunteer helps approximately 150 people.”
