On March 11, the University of Cincinnati hosted the
Southwest Ohio Science and Engineering Expo. More than 300 students in grades
5-12 residing in Hamilton, Butler, Clermont, Preble and Warren counties
presented projects at the Expo.
Teachers, professionals and community members in
STEM-related fields served as volunteer judges and awarded more than $45,000 in
scholarships and prizes. Pilot Chemical sponsored the Expo, and three Pilot employees
Todd Klopfenstein, Dilip Mathur, and Rick Shook - judged projects relating to
surfactants, sanitizers and disinfectants.
“It is a wonderful opportunity for kids both to participate
and to showcase what they are capable of doing,” said Rick.
On March 15, Rick also appeared on Fox 19 with Kayla Reidy,
an eighth-grader at Walnut Hills, to speak about the Expo. Kayla advanced to
State Science Day in May with her project that tested the best cleaning
products to remove peanut residue. You can view Rick and Kayla’s Fox 19 segment
