Pilot Chemical Sponsors the Southwest Ohio Science and Engineering Expo

On March 11, the University of Cincinnati hosted the Southwest Ohio Science and Engineering Expo. More than 300 students in grades 5-12 residing in Hamilton, Butler, Clermont, Preble and Warren counties presented projects at the Expo.

Teachers, professionals and community members in STEM-related fields served as volunteer judges and awarded more than $45,000 in scholarships and prizes. Pilot Chemical sponsored the Expo, and three Pilot employees Todd Klopfenstein, Dilip Mathur, and Rick Shook - judged projects relating to surfactants, sanitizers and disinfectants.

“It is a wonderful opportunity for kids both to participate and to showcase what they are capable of doing,” said Rick.

On March 15, Rick also appeared on Fox 19 with Kayla Reidy, an eighth-grader at Walnut Hills, to speak about the Expo. Kayla advanced to State Science Day in May with her project that tested the best cleaning products to remove peanut residue. Pilot Chemical Company Sponsors Local Chemistry Competition

Middle school students from Hamilton County, Ohio, competed in the third-annual local You Be The Chemist® Challenge on February 27 at Taylor Middle School in the Three Rivers School District. Developed by the Chemical Educational Foundation® (CEF), the Challenge is an exciting question-and-answer competition that encourages fifth- to eighth-grade students to sharpen their knowledge of chemistry concepts and their real-world applications. Students compete for prizes at the local and state levels and the ultimate prize of a trip to Washington, D.C. to vie for college scholarships. The Challenge program relies on partnerships between community members and organizations that seek to foster early engagement with science.

As one of several sponsors of the local Challenge, Pilot Chemical gave all of the competing students backpacks and water bottles.

“Thank you to all of the participants in the local You Be The Chemist® Challenge. PilotChemical Company is proud to be a sponsor,” said Michele Smith, EHS&S engineer at Pilot. “We congratulate all of the participants and thank their teachers whose hard work and dedication creates the next generation of talented chemists.”

Lee Garber-Ford, a seventh grader from Taylor Middle School, won and will represent Hamilton Country at the statewide Challenge in Toledo on April 29, 2017. The winner of the state competition will receive an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C to compete in the National Challenge on June 19 for $18,500 in college scholarships.

Pilot Chemical Company Achieves Responsible Care® Certification

Pilot Chemical Company announced today it earned its certification under the American Chemistry Council (ACC) Responsible Care program demonstrating the company’s commitment to the highest standards of health, safety, security and environmental performance for both its products and operations.

“Responsible Care has always been at the heart of Pilot Chemical. This certification proves our longstanding daily commitment to ethical, safe, secure and environmentally sound practices that protect our employees, customers and the communities where we live and work,” said Mike Scott, president of Pilot Chemical. “I am very proud of our leadership’s dedication and our commitment to continuous improvement.”

Responsible Care is a voluntary environmental, health, safety and security initiative led by the ACC. Chemical companies interested in earning certification, pledge to operate their business according to the Responsible Care Guiding Principles and undergo a mandatory re-certification every three years by an accredited, third-party auditor.

Pilot Chemical participated in a comprehensive review that included environmental management, safety procedures, regulatory compliance, product safety, security measures, emergency response plans and community outreach. The audit was conducted by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance (LRQA).

Responsible Care is the chemical industry’s commitment to a more sustainable future,” said Debra Phillips, vice president of ResponsibleCare and Value Chain Outreach at ACC. “ACC congratulates Pilot Chemical on fulfilling the requirements to be certified under Responsible Care and for its leadership in demonstrating significant achievements in environment, health, safety and security performance.”

The certification will add to Pilot Chemical’s already robust Product Stewardship Program that includes a membership to ChemStewards – a mandatory requirement for SOCMA (Society of Chemical Manufacturers & Affiliates). Contact more http://pilotchemical.com
